The deteriorating quality of elementary education in the past few decades have raised many questions on the education system of India.
According to NCERT, a review of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) will start soon to provide quality education to students up to the elementary stage. The changes done in NCF 2005 will bring changes in the CBSE syllabus, textbooks and the teaching process of schools.
What is National Curriculum Framework?
The National Curriculum framework provides a framework for making syllabi, textbooks and teaching practices within the school education programs in India. They are used to guide and assist schools to plan, design and review their curriculum, learning, and teaching strategies.
The National Curriculum Framework 2005 was emphasized on ‘learning without burden’. The focus was on reduction of syllabus.
Previous NCFs: The NCFs were carried out on four occasions in the year 1975, 1988, 2000 and 2005.
Steps taken by NCERT:
As a part of the 2018 rationalization of textbooks, 72,000 stakeholders among them students, teachers, parents, and intellectuals were included and they gave over 1 lakh suggestions. These were critically analyzed and will form the basis of the next NCF. NCERT will also train teachers for the same by the end of 2019. The review will be done keeping in mind the present situation and problems. The changes will be done according to the recent changes in the society and educational system.
Hrushikesh Senapaty, Director of NCERT, quoted in TOI,
“Society needs a change and our focus will, therefore, be on experiential learning. This will further take forward the shift of focus of 15 years ago from teachers to the students to promote learning without a burden and to change the tendency to learning by rote.”
